Gloucester Geese

20th January 2015

After free ranging over the farm for the past 8 months it is now the time of year to be putting our geese into pairs ready for the breeding season. There is an old saying that all good geese should have laid by Valentine's day so I had better be getting on with it. Our geese are a very special breed called Gloucester Geese.

It is a breed which I have been working on perfecting over the last 40 years. They are an 'autosexing' breed, an odd term which denotes that they can be sexed on their appearance. At birth the males are yellow with pink bill and the females are dusky with dark bill. As adults the males are white and the females have a grey body and whitish head and neck. My aim for this breed is that they should convert grass to meat and eggs.
